Olive-backed owstoni Narcissus Flycatcher-26th April,2008

by Li Jing & Zhang Lin

This spring there seemed to be much more Narcissus Flycatcher Ficedula narcissina passing Shanghai than usual.
We visited Xiaoyangshan Island near Shanghai on 26th April. Many Narcissus Flycatcher narcissina, most were adult males, with a few Second Calendar-year male. When having lunch near a well, one of them with green crown and mantle attracted us.It seemed to be a rare Olive-backed Narcissus Flycatcher Ficedula narcissina owstoni which breeds in some islands near Japan.

Olive-green crown and mantle,
Yellow throat with a little orange tone,
White belly,
Two-toned ear coverts(black and olive-green),
Two-toned rump(yellow and olive-green),
Little white on wings,

indicates a Second Calendar-year male.

There're more and more records coming from Taiwan. And in 2005,apparently the first record of this form for mainland China was recorded in Guangzhou(China Bird Report 2005).This bird is probably the first for Zhejiang Province.

Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher Culicicapa ceylonensis also recorded as the first record for Zhejiang Province.
